Carlton Motorcycles
Fred Hanstock had taken on agencies for several makes of motorcycles
and eventually went into production on a small scale with his own models.
They were marketed as Carlton until he relinquished his interest in
Carlton, they were then marketed under his own name as HE (Hanstock
Engineering).
JAP, Villiers and Sturmey Archer engines were used. Frame fittings
and tubing were obtained from the Sun Cycle and Fittings Company of
Birmingham.
One very special Carlton was built in 1922 using a 350cc JAP engine.
George Robinson recorded 69.89mph at a Clipstone Drive sprint meeting
- good going for a side valve.
A Villiers powered H.E. available as 98cc or 125cc,
circa 1939.
